The accident occurred at South Mountain back of West Leroy. According to reports of the accident, Gleckner was breaking his gun to eject a shell when the weapon discharged the shot lodging in Benedict’s thigh, severing veins and arteries and causing a great loss of blood before the flow could be stopped. Pictured here at Fred and Verna's second farm at Bradford Hill, Steuben County, New York, is Ellen Crandle Benedict circa 1928. The second farm was on the Sonora-Bradford Road. It was up the hill from their first "Valley Farm" in Sonora. Fred and Verna sold cream and eggs, raised pigs for winter meat for the family and in the spring tapped maple trees for sap which was made into maple syrup. There was also a field of black raspberries which the children helped to pick.

Ellen left New York in 1933 for sunny California. She went to stay with a friend of her mother's, Eleanor Burrell, and her children in Long Beach, California. Besides being a nanny to Mrs. Burrell's two boys, Ellen attended Long Beach Junior College for $5.00 per semester! After junior college she moved to the Westwood campus of U.C.L.A. and graduated in the spring of 1939. Ellen models a stylish outfit she created and crafted herself. Ellen passed away April 1, 2014 at the age of 98.

During the summer of 1938 Ellen went back to New York to visit with her family. It turned into a very special family reunion which they held in Syracuse, New York. Pictured here on the left are sisters, Martha, Janet, and Ellen Benedict. On the right are the brothers, Cran, Weston and Bill Benedict. Ellen met her future husband, Howard Wilson, on this trip.

Verna Deming Crandle, daughter of Martha Rosette Barnes and Job Robards Crandle, was born April 30, 1879 in Grover, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. She was the seventh child of nine children. This picture was taken in 1902. The notes on the back of this picture describe the construction of her dress: "Dress pink voile--black lace, case knife pleating ruffle on bottom. Also wore a bustle and 4 petticoats, each measuring at least 4 yards around the bottom-- dress 4 and one half yards at bottom." Verna was 30 years old when she married Fred W. Benedict in 1909. She was Fred's second wife. Together they had seven children. Verna died October 11, 1967 and is buried at the East Canton Cemetery in Canton, Pennsylvania. Fred Weston Benedict - "As a young man, Dad had a beautiful tenor voice. I never heard about voice lessons so this talent must have come naturally to him. His three sisters also had unusual musical ability. We have pictures of Dad in the choir robes of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath, New York. I don’t know how long he sang in that choir. When our family moved from Bath to a farm in Sonora about 1916, it was too far to go to Bath to sing in the choir. However, there was a small Methodist Church in Sonora that the family attended. Once in a while during a special church service, my father would sing a solo accompanied by my mother at the piano". (Memories by Ellen Benedict) Also, see Memories of Dad.

Harriet "Hattie" Louise Miner was the third child born to Sereno Weston Miner and Sarah Louise (Williams) Miner. Hattie was Fred W. Benedict's sister. She was born 3 June 1869 in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY. She died 19 June 1954 and is buried in the Main Street Cemetery in Canton, PA. Because she was "adopted" by her step-father, Frank E. Benedict, she used the name Hattie Benedict. Her step-father, Frank E. Benedict was a local photographer in Canton, PA. "Miss Hattie was a musician and artist and well-known in Canton. She has the type of voice known as lyric soprano - a light and clear voice. She began her study in Syracuse, later continuing with a Professor Parker who was in Canton for a time. She toured with his concert company and later with another group." (Canton Sentinal, 1950)
