Sarah Louise Williams

Sarah Louise Williams was born 6 March 1842 in Owego, Tioga Co., NY. She was the daughter of Ira Williams (1814 - 1847) and Olive Cook Ufford (1817 - 1899). After the death of her father in 1847 Sarah went to live with her great uncle, Ansel Berry in Norwich, Chenango County, New York. It was probably in Norwich that she met her future husband, Sereno W. Miner who was living in Norwich at the time. She married (1) Sereno W. Miner 9 Sept. 1863. Together the couple had three children. Sereno W. Miner died 9 March 1870 in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY. He was the son of Luther Miner, Jr. (1788 - 1861) and Nancy Moore (1790 - 1856). It is said that Sereno was a mechanical engineer who helped build pontoon bridges at the Cumberland Gap. He did not bear arms in the Civil War, but was employed by the U.S. during Lincoln's administration. He is remembered as having been a very proud, haughty and austere man. Sereno died March 9, 1870 leaving Louise with two children (John Berry Miner died in 1867 at age three).

The children of Sereno W. Miner and Sarah Louise (Williams) Miner were:

  • John Berry Miner, born 11 Aug 1864; died June 1867
  • Frederick Weston Miner, born 5 Sept. 1866; died 25 Apr 1942
  • Harriet "Hattie" Louise Miner, born 3 Jun 1869; died 19 June 1954

Sereno Miner died in 1870 leaving Sarah Louise with two small children, Fred was only four years old, Hattie was less than a year old. The 1870 Federal Census, NY, Chenango Co., Norwich lists Sarah L. Miner, age 28, with no husband, census was enumerated in June 1870. With Sarah L. Miner is Fred W. Miner age 3 and Hattie Miner, age 1.

Two years later, 14 Dec. 1872, Sarah Louise Miner married Frank E. Benedict in Canton, Bradford Co., PA. Frank was born 22 Dec. 1853 in Southport, NY. He was the son of Samuel Benedict (1806 - 1884) and Harriet N. Crowell (1815 - 1897). Frank was eleven years younger than Sarah Louise. Frank was a photograher in Canton, PA. Together Frank and Sarah Louise Benedict had two children, Maude Gertrude 1875 - 1959) and Georgiana "Georgia" St. John Benedict (1880 - 1955). Frank died 4 Dec. 1933 in Canton, Bradford Co., PA; Sarah Louise Benedict died 18 Sept. 1914 in Canton, PA. Both are buried in the Main Street Cemetery, Canton, PA. BENEDICT SISTERS LOCAL MUSICIANS
Mrs. Georgia Gleckner Has Art Displays
The three talented daughters of Frank Benedict, himself a musician and artist, should be mentioned among those who have contributed to the cultural growth of Canton. Miss Maude went to New York for a term of voice study, intending to return there for further work but upon the recommendation of Frank Mayo, remained at home to study with Blanche Davenport. Later she toured with a concert group, but having continued to live in Canton, she and her sister have always participated in choir and community activities. Miss Maude is the possessor of an unusually rich, vibrant contralto voice backed up by very sure musicianship.

Miss Hattie has the type of voice known as lyric soprano - a light and clear voice. She began her study in Syracuse, later continuing with a Professor Parker who was in Canton for a time. She toured with his concert company and later with another group.
Both of these talented women have been somewhat frail in body, but in heart, mind and spirit they have been strong. They have been ever faithful and generous in all worthwhile community efforts.

Georgia Benedict Gleckner is a talented pianist but she inclined rather toward her father's interest in painting. There have been several shows of her work in canton and Florida. She served as Art Chairman of the V.I.A. for several years. She was chosen to do the Florida scenes for the Florida Building at the New York World's Fair. She now lives with her son Robert in Mt. Vernon, New York.
